Eunice Wishop Stromberg Spelling Bee Endowment

No Idle Zone

Eunice Wishop Stromberg

Spelling Bee Endowment Challenge

Established on March 17, 2010, this exciting endowment challenge was named for Eunice Wishop Stromberg.  Eunice was a life long Rockford resident who worked as a Secretary at National Lock and, in her free time, enjoyed playing cards with her husband and dancing to Big Band Music.  She was very fond of children, but never had any of her own.  At family gatherings, "Aunt Eunice" was surrounded by various nieces and nephews, catching up on all the details in their lives.  In addition, Eunice often reminded her family about the value of academic excellence and the importance of its pursuit.

It is fitting therefore that upon hearing that the Regional Office of Education was having difficulty finding a sponsor so that area students could compete in the Regional Spelling Bee, the Board of Trustees of the Community Foundation voted unanimously to use a portion of Eunice Wishop Stromberg's un-restricted bequest to establish a permanent endowment to support the spelling bee into perpetuity.

The Community Foundation challenges the Northern Illinois community to raise $50,000 for this important initiative.  Every dollar raised will be matched, dollar for dollar up to $50,000.  The goal of this campaign is to raise an endowment worth $100,000 that will support the financial expenses of the Boone Winnebago Regional Spelling Bee... forever!

No Idle Zone

The No Idle Zone is a local, voluntary movement, aimed at educating citizens about the detrimental environmental, health and economic issues associated with excessive engine idling.  Quite simply, un-necessary vehicle idling wastes gas and money and pollutes the environment.  The movement is a grassroots effort born from the enthusiasm of everyday people and the collaboration of community partners.
