Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Intend to enroll in an American Dental Association-accredited dental, dental hygiene, or graduate post-doctoral program in the upcoming school year.
- Be attending or plan to attend a two- or four-year college or university in the state of Illinois or the Indiana School of Dentistry.
- Demonstrate financial need.

Scholarship Background and Intent
Richard John Schnell was born in Springfield, Illinois and grew up in Pecatonica. He was a 1946 graduate of St. Louis University’s Doctor of Dental Surgery degree program. He served in the United States Army before earning a master’s of science degree from Indiana University, and serving as a professor in the dental school’s Department of Dental Materials for nearly four decades. Dr. Schnell was an internationally recognized scientist and educator, with numerous publications in scientific journals, and contributions to several dental textbooks. He was a member of the International Association for Dental Research and the American Association for Dental Research. At the dental school, he was well known as a skillful and empathetic mentor of graduate level students.
